Some fabrics are theoretically “eco-friendly” but have poor embroidery adhesion and deform quickly after washing; some certifications sound authoritative but only cover raw materials, not the dyeing process. This article does not intend to pile up concepts, but only focuses on one thing: in 2026, which eco-friendly fabrics are really usable, and which pitfalls you need to avoid in advance.
What Aspects Do Certificates for Eco-Friendly Fabrics on the Market Cover?
Before purchasing eco-friendly hats, it is necessary to understand the actual meaning of several mainstream certifications on the market—because they cover very different scopes and cannot be confused.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): The strictest organic certification, covering the entire supply chain from fiber planting to finished products. It requires fabrics to contain at least 70% certified organic natural fibers and prohibits the use of harmful chemicals throughout the process, making it the “gold standard” for organic cotton.
GRS (Global Recycled Standard): Targets recycled materials, only verifying the source of recycled raw materials and supply chain traceability, and does not involve the environmental friendliness of dyeing and finishing processes.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Only tests finished fabrics for harmful chemicals (such as pesticide residues and heavy metals). It is a product safety certification and has nothing to do with the production process.
Core differences among the three: GOTS covers the process, GRS covers raw materials, and OEKO-TEX covers products. Fabrics with credible full-chain compliance usually require two or more certifications, which is crucial for purchasing decisions.
Eco-Friendly Fabrics Suitable for Bulk Custom Hats: A Detailed Evaluation
1. Organic Cotton
Comprehensive Rating: Highly Recommended
Organic cotton is currently the most mature eco-friendly fabric used in bulk custom hats. Compared with conventional cotton, organic cotton uses no synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers during the planting stage. Some studies show that rain-fed organic cotton can reduce water consumption by more than 90%.
For hats, organic cotton twill is the most common choice, usually with a weight of 270–300g/m². It has a stable structure, good shape retention, and strong embroidery adhesion. It is often used in bulk orders of organic cotton dad hats, casual eco-friendly hats, and six-panel baseball caps, which are mature products on the market with a stable supply chain.
2. Recycled Polyester / rPET
Comprehensive Rating: Highly Recommended
rPET is a polyester fabric made by recycling, melting, and re-spinning waste plastic bottles (PET bottles). Data shows that producing rPET consumes 59% less energy and reduces carbon emissions by about 32% compared with producing virgin polyester.
In terms of user experience, the performance of rPET is basically the same as that of virgin polyester—it is equally lightweight, durable, moisture-wicking, and wrinkle-resistant. For hats, rPET is particularly suitable for making mesh back panels of trucker hats and functional sports hats, with excellent embroidery and screen printing effects.
3. Recycled Cotton
Comprehensive Rating: Suitable for Specific Scenarios
Recycled cotton is made by breaking down waste cotton products or textile scraps and spinning them into new yarn. Its eco-friendly logic is straightforward: no need to grow new cotton, reducing land and water resource consumption.
However, there is a practical issue: after cotton fibers are chopped and re-spun, their length and strength decrease. Therefore, most recycled cotton products on the market are blended—usually mixed with 30%–50% polyester to make up for the lack of strength.
For brands pursuing an extreme eco-friendly narrative, recycled cotton is a plus; but if you have high requirements for the service life and shape stability of hats, pure recycled cotton fabrics need to be carefully evaluated.
4. Organic Hemp
Comprehensive Rating: Potential Fabric, Suitable for Specific Positioning
Hemp (industrial hemp) is a natural fiber crop that grows quickly and requires almost no pesticides or irrigation. More notably, it absorbs CO₂ from the atmosphere during growth, making it a carbon-negative raw material. Hemp fabric also has natural antibacterial and UV-resistant properties.
For hats, organic hemp fabric is highly durable, with a slightly rough surface and a “natural texture”. It becomes softer and softer with repeated washing, which is an interesting feature that distinguishes it from other fabrics. However, its embroidery adhesion is above average, making it suitable for simple logo designs; complex detailed embroidery needs to be confirmed by sampling in advance.
5. Merino Wool
Comprehensive Rating: First Choice for High-End Knit Hats
Merino wool is a high-end eco-friendly fabric choice for knit hats. It has excellent natural temperature regulation properties, keeping dry during high-intensity sports; it can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water without feeling wet; moreover, 100% natural merino wool can be completely biodegradable in just 6 months, while synthetic fibers may take 200 years.
However, it should be noted that not all wool is eco-friendly. When choosing hat fabrics, look for the RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certification to ensure that the wool comes from pastures that meet animal welfare and land management standards.
The price of merino wool is significantly higher than other fabrics, making it suitable for high-end gift hats, winter sports club peripherals, and brands with premium positioning. It is not suitable for bulk orders pursuing low costs.
Horizontal Comparison of Fabrics: A Quick Reference for Bulk Purchasing Decisions

How to Verify Whether Products Meet Eco-Friendly Requirements with Suppliers?
This is a link that many buyers easily overlook. Just saying “we use organic cotton” verbally is not enough. Here are the specific documents you should request:
Documents That Must Be Verified:
•Original GOTS or GRS certificate (including certificate number and validity period)
•OEKO-TEX certificate or BLUESIGN certification from the dye supplier
•Fabric composition test report (issued by a third party)
Additional Information That Can Be Requested:
•Carbon footprint report of the fabric factory
•BSCI or WRAP social responsibility audit report of the hat production factory
•OEKO-TEX product test report of the finished hats
If the supplier obviously evades or delays any of the above documents, this in itself is a red flag.
